LTC (Ret.) Jean Elizabeth Hammond, 78, of Columbus, GA passed peacefully Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Columbus Hospice House surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Jean was born December 26, 1938 in Plainfield, NJ, to Dr. Philip Dartt Hammond and Ruth(Houghton) Hammond. She is predeceased by her parents and loving sister, Phyllis Finch.
Jean is survived by her loving brother, Robert "Bob" (Patricia) Hammond, Brother-In-law, Richard Finch; nephews Charles Finch and Michael Hammond, nieces Nancy Madison and Susan Hammond Novitski: great-nephews Joseph, Dustin, Dylan, and Jagger and great-nieces Jolita, Sierra and Alyxsandrhea; great-great-nieces Selena, Natalia, and Kelsey and great-great-nephews Joseph Jr and Remington.

Jean received her nursing education at Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington, VT, and began her career at Boston Children's Hospital, then with the US Public Health Service at Crown Point, NM with the Navajo. She later earned her MSN from Yale University School of Nursing and was a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Jean was commissioned with the US Army in 1967, and was proud to have served in several locations including Landstuhl, Germany; Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, DC, and most recently Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. She received several commendations including The Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal. Jean retired after 22 years with the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Jeans hobbies and interests were many and varied including: quilting, photography, painting, writing, travel, medical missions (which took her to Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, Venezuela, NM/AZ, and Kenya). She was involved in Professional, Civic and Social organizations. Jean was a dedicated volunteer for Columbus Hospice for many years. She most recently was a member of Evangel Temple.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, June 23, 2017 at Evangel Temple 5350 Veterans Parkway Columbus, GA 31904 with Pastors Bud Rupel, Scott Tucker and Mike McBride officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
It was Jean's wish to be laid to rest at Mount Ascutney Cemetery in Brownsville, VT amongst her family overlooking the mountains, beautiful in all seasons.
