Harris County has lost an active member of the community. Lucy Floyd Brownell passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015, a month before her 85th birthday. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P. M. Sunday at Bethesda Baptist Church with Reverend Donnie McCoy officiating. A private interment will be held at Evergreen Memory Gardens, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Brownell was born on June 28, 1930 in Abbeyville, AL to Oscar and Ethel Culpepper. Besides her parents Lucy was preceded in death by three siblings; Rose, Henry, and Rubin Culpepper.
Lucy is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Carl Brownell, four siblings; Betty Tant, Frances Stevens, Frank Culpepper, and Dorothy Parker; 57 nieces and nephews, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Mrs. Brownell graduated from Turner Private School in Columbus, GA. Lucy has attended the Bethesda Baptist Church and Sunday school since moving to Ellerslie, GA. She retired from the Harris County Tax Collector Office. She helped organize and was an active member of the Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Department, never missed a function or meeting of the American Bussiness Women Association in 29 and a half years, and was woman of the year several times during her tenure.
