Martha Lou Phillips Isom, 93, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at her home.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM EST Monday, June 12, 2017 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery with her grandson, Brandon Dobson, of Wilmington, NC officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mrs. Isom was born May 18, 1924, in Birmingham, AL to Horton McKinley Phillips, born Indian Territory, OK., and Minnie Ruth Riddle, Harrison, TN. She graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, TN in 1942.
During World War II, she worked for TAG Railway in Chattanooga, TN. After the war, she married James Nelson Isom in 1946, and they traveled with the ARMY until his retirement at Ft. Benning in 1966. They participated in square dancing and round dancing in Europe and stateside and formed the Fountain City Squares and Yellow Rock Rounddancers.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Nelson Isom, and her son, James Nelson Isom, II.
She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Benefield (Roy) of Cataula, GA and Phyllis Lutz (Chris) of Houston, TX. She has seven grandchildren, Heather Lunsford (Eddie) of Phenix City, AL; Leigh Roller of Columbus, GA; Bryan Lutz (Shawna) of Houston, TX; David Lutz (Andrea) of Houston, TX; James "Bo" Isom, III (Crystal) of Columbus, GA; Richard Isom (Tabitha) of Columbus, GA; Amanda Fusion of Columbus, GA. She has 19 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. She has one sister, Jean Marterre (David Hoskinson), of Charleston, SC, and 4 nieces and 1 nephew.
