Mrs. Mary Lou Wood (nee Gething), 79, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia. A devoted servant to others throughout her life, she leaves behind a legacy of faith and tireless dedication to her community and beyond.
Born on March 21, 1946, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Mary Lou was the youngest of five children. She pursued her passion for education and service early on, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Alderson Broaddus University and later a Master’s degree in Education from Eastern Kentucky University.
Mary Lou’s career was marked by a deep commitment to global and local service. She began her journey with the Peace Corps in Ghana and continued her international outreach through the International Voluntary Services (IVS) in Laos. Upon returning to the United States, she dedicated herself to teaching and community work in Appalachia. She served as a volunteer and teacher at Red Bird Mission and later taught middle school English at Oneida Baptist Institute – roles through which she touched countless young lives with her guidance and care. Her care extended far beyond the classroom. As the volunteer coordinator for Faith in Action at The Bennett Center, Mary Lou provided respite care for families in need. She also volunteered regularly at the local library, First Baptist Church fitness center, and her local hospital, offering comfort and support to patients and their families during difficult times.
A faithful, lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Mary Lou lived out her beliefs through action. Her church community was central to her life, where she remained an active participant and volunteer throughout the years. Whether organizing events or lending a helping hand to those facing hardship, she embodied the spirit of service that defined her life. Mary Lou is lovingly remembered by her children: Robert William Wood (Alanna Wood), Timothy Raymond Wood (Jennifer Wood), and Patricia Elaine Holabeck (Dave Holabeck). She was the proud grandmother of twelve grandchildren who brought immense joy into her life. She is also survived by her niece, Anne Holter Bernard, and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Wood and four older siblings – Doris Holter, Russell Gething, Patricia Gething, and Ron Gething – who helped shape the strong foundation of family values that guided her life.
A private memorial service celebrating Mary Lou’s life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Mary Lou’s unwavering devotion to helping others continues to inspire all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort and strength to those whose lives she touched so deeply.
