Born on February 25, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, Michael’s journey was one of dedication both to his country and to his family, leaving behind a legacy characterized by honesty, protection, and care.
His career stands as a testament to his commitment and prowess. Serving in the United States Navy for an admirable 27 years, Michael attained the respected rank of Master Chief. Following his military tenure, he devoted 17 years as a coordinator for the US Army Marksmanship Unit, where his leadership and meticulous attention to detail undoubtedly influenced many. His educational pursuits further illustrated his determination for self-improvement and knowledge, holding both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Education.
Michael was a man of principles—deeply devoted and loyalty defined his every action. Those who knew him well remember his directness and unapologetic honesty, qualities that inspired trust and respect among his family and friends. He embraced the role of protector and provider with a fierce ardor, ensuring that his loved ones were always cared for. Among those who carry forward his memory and spirit are his cherished wife, Rosario Behnke; his son, Michael Joseph Behnke Jr., and daughter-in-law, Christy (Garland) Behnke; his daughter, Michelle (Behnke) Johannes; his devoted nephew, Jose Costa Roca; and grandchildren Mckenzie, Tristan, and Kaylor Johannes, who undoubtedly inherited his strength and character. He is also survived by his siblings Christie Behnke, Alex Solomon, Emil Solomon, Mary (Behnke) Shahan, and many beloved extended family members.
A public memorial celebrating Michael’s life will be held at McMullen Funeral Home in Columbus, Georgia, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. The family will be available at 11:00 a.m. to welcome visitors. This gathering of family, friends, and admirers will be followed by a graveside service with military honors at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama, at 2:30 pm, a fitting farewell for a man whose life was interwoven with service to his nation.
Michael Joseph Behnke’s legacy transcends the canvas of his years, etched vividly through his resolute spirit, his commitment to family, and his honorable service.
