Michael A. Gilbert, a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Michael was born to Maj. Joe M. Gilbert and Martha M. Gilbert, who welcomed him into the world, and his legacy will forever honor their memory.

A proud United States Marine, Michael served from 1980 to 1984 in ordinance with the Marine Air Group VMFA312. His dedication to service exemplified his strong character and commitment to his country.

Michael was a graduate of Shaw High School, Class of 1980. He was deeply devoted to his family and close friends, always willing to lend a hand in times of need. He instilled a love for music in his daughter, Meredith Gilbert, ensuring that she received a well-rounded musical education, reflecting his own passion for all types of music. Their bond was strengthened through countless hours spent together, particularly during her childhood as they engaged in equestrian activities.

In his later years, Michael found joy in gardening, creating an inviting habitat for nature’s creatures. He took great pride in his dogs, Jenny and Liv, and treasured the time spent at the farm in Tennessee, where laughter and love resonated among family and friends.

One of his proudest accomplishments came when he was honored by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission and received a mayoral proclamation from the City of Columbus for his bravery in saving the life of a neighbor from a house fire. This act of heroism reflects Michael's selflessness and commitment to helping others, traits that endeared him to many.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Freya Gilbert; their daughter, Meredith Gilbert, and son-in-law, Josh Plock; his sister, Tammy Duke; brother-in-law, Phillip Duke; nieces, Claire Beczkalo (husband Mike) Anne Marchetta, and Brandy Rowell; mother-in-law, Gene Snyder; great aunt-in-law, Mildred Kresge; and close friends, Norman Shelton, Rene Owens, and Bill Stanaland.

Michael is predeceased by his father, Maj. Joe M. Gilbert, his mother, Martha M. Gilbert, and his sister, Martha Ann Peel.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory in Columbus, GA, on June 19, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for visitation.
