Michael “Big Mike” Steele, 65, passed away unexpectedly on August 3, 2026.

Mike was born on June 7, 1961, in Savannah, Georgia, to Joyce Pierce and the late Shelby Steele.

For 45 wonderful years, Mike shared a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion with his beloved wife, Debbie Steele. Together they built a family that was the center of his world.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Debbie Steele; his daughter, Ashley Hawthorne of Hamilton; his son, Michael (Jessica) Steele of Fortson; and his treasured grandchildren, William Hunter Hawthorne, Matthew William Steele, Joshua Swanson, and Caleb Swanson. his siblings, Gene Gallops, Steven (Angie) Wagoner, Ricky Wagoner, and Wes (Melissa) Stevenson,Tina Jackson; along with many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, countless friends and "Pup" Yeti.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Shelby Steele and mother, Joyce Pierce.

After faithfully serving the State of Georgia for 35 years, Mike retired and enjoyed spending time with the people he loved most. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence made every gathering brighter. Affectionately known as “Big Mike,” he never met a stranger. His warm smile, generous heart, quick wit, and willingness to help anyone in need left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Mike was a passionate fan of Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves. Whether cheering on the Crimson Tide on Saturdays or watching the Braves, he found joy in sharing those moments with family and friends. More than anything, however, he loved being surrounded by those he loved. His greatest happiness came from making memories with his family, celebrating life’s milestones, and simply being together.

Although our hearts are broken by his sudden passing, we are grateful for the countless memories, laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love he gave so freely. His legacy of kindness, loyalty, and love will continue to live on through his family and all whose lives he touched.

The family will host a private memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Mike’s memory by spending time with those you love, cheering on your favorite team, offering a helping hand to someone in need, and remembering to never take a single day for granted.
