Nelson Clements Coffin, III 88, of Cuthbert, Georgia died September 7, 2019 at the Fellowship Home Assisted Living in Cuthbert, Georgia.
A Celebration of his life will be hosted at a later date at the Fellowship Home 6330 Highway 82 W. Cuthbert, GA 39840
Nelson was born September 25, 1930 in Cuthbert, GA, son of the late Nelson Clements Coffin, Jr. and Carolyn Cheves Coffin. He was a graduate of Emory University, and later received his law degree from UGA Law School graduating in 1957. Nelson open his law practice in Columbus and eventually joined with his friend the Honorable Jack Brinkley to form the law firm Coffin and Brinkley. He retired after 40 years in Columbus and returned to his hometown of Cuthbert. He was a member of Cuthbert United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served in many other areas with the church and loved his Georgia Bulldogs. He was a US Army Veteran serving in the Korean conflict.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his half-sister Esther Coffin Miller, his stepmother Josephine Reid Coffin and a step-daughter Martha Karen Heard.
He is survived by his wife Martha Ann Meadows Coffin of Cuthbert, Georgia, stepdaughter Ann Heard Stanford, three grandchildren Stuart of Shellman, GA, Karen of Athens, GA, and Amelia of Cuthbert, GA. A cousin Steve Sewell of Roanoke, VA, a niece Laura Wiggins of Cuthbert, GA and her children Moty, Douglas and Emma along with other nieces and nephews. His family and friends at the Fellowship Home and especially his loyal friend Elvis.
