Olin Lafayette Harp, a beloved educator, mentor, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 26, 2025, at the age of 88, in Columbus, Georgia. Born in Cusseta, Georgia, on August 30, 1937, Olin dedicated his life to nurturing the minds and hearts of countless students throughout his distinguished 40-year career in education.
After graduating from Cusseta High School in 1955, Olin attended LaGrange College before earning his BA in Education and his MA in Math Education from the University of Georgia. His passion for teaching led him to serve as a coach at Northside High School in Warner Robins, GA, and later as a math teacher at Faith Middle School. His contributions to education were profound; he rose through the ranks to become Vice Principal and then Principal at Faith Middle School on Fort Benning, where he spent an impressive 30 years. During his tenure, he trained many of the principals for Fort Benning DOD Schools which attests to his influence and commitment to educational excellence. He also served as Principal at the Chattahoochee County Education Center for five years before retiring.
Olin was not only a champion for education but a steadfast advocate for all children, firmly believing that every child has the capacity to learn. He was a mentor and a friend to many, embodying a spirit of kindness and guidance that was felt by students and colleagues alike. Saturdays were cherished moments spent cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs, fishing, and spending time with family, while Sundays were reserved for God and church. His love for good food also resonated deeply; he was an avid cook and instilled in his family a profound appreciation for culinary delights.
Olin's proudest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind his loving daughters, Kathryn Van Horn (Ken) and Vivian Brust (Vince), his son, Brad Harp (Noor), and his cherished grandchildren: Hannah V. Hopkins (Anthony), Dr. Sam Van Horn, Katelynn Harp, Garrett Brust, and Brenden Harp. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Annelle Harp, his nephews Henry (LeAnn) and Rhett Harp. Preceding him in death were his dear wife of 62 years, Lynn Waller Harp, his parents, Henry K. Harp, Sr. and Lily Evans Harp, and his brother, Hon. H. K. Harp, Jr.
As we remember Olin Lafayette Harp, we celebrate a life filled with love, education, and unwavering commitment to both family and community. His legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the values he instilled in those he loved.
