Paul E. Cockrell, 82, of Midland, GA died Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at Columbus Hospice House. His life was a treasured part of his family's story. The love he shared, the memories he created, and the bonds he built with those closest to him will never be forgotten. His family will forever cherish the moments they shared with him and hold his memory close to their hearts.
Paul was born February 16, 1944, in Danville, Illinois. He was the 7th of 10 children. At 18, he enlisted in the United States Army. Paul was a proud Vietnam Veteran and retired as a SSG after 20 years and 1 day. While stationed in Hawaii, he met Karen and they were married September 25, 1965. They were blessed with three children Tim, Steven, and Tina. Paul enjoyed bowling, playing cornhole, wrestling, roller derby, and most of all, working on cars and detailing them. But the one thing he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family and helping others out in need. Paul was someone you could always count on; if he said he would do it, there was no doubt it would be done quickly.
He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Karen Cockrell; their two children, son Tim Cockrell (Melinda) and daughter Tina Hicks; his beloved grandchildren Kaylyn Cockrell, Peyton Cockrell (Jade), and Kyle Hicks (Anastasia); a great-granddaughter, Amaya Hicks; and a great-great-grandson, Sutton Davis. He is also survived by his sister Delilah and brother Carroll. Paul was from a large family, so he is also leaving behind many loved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his son, Steven Cockrell; granddaughter, Allison Hicks; son-in-law, Mark Hicks; and mother, Helen Reasons. Also preceding him in death were his siblings Bettye, Willetta, Bobby, William, Mary, Teddy, and Ronnie.
The family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday October 19, 2026 at McMullen Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 in the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Dawson officiating. Following at 12:30, Paul will be laid to rest at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery with military honors.
