Rev. James “Eke” Brown, a devoted pastor whose faithful ministry spanned over three decades across numerous states, peacefully passed away on May 4, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Eke's life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 9, 2026, in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Georgia 31907. Interment will follow the service at Parkhill Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim Bugg, John Lewis, Joey Lewis, Thomas Childers, Dick Bagwell and David Smith.
Eke was born February 29, 1956, in Columbus, Georgia. Eke lived a life rich in service, education, with love and devotion for his family and friends. A graduate of Jordan High School in 1974, Eke furthered his calling by earning his Bachelor’s degree from the Baptist Bible Institute in 1983 before earning his Master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1986. His educational journey fortified his lifelong love and dedication to Jesus Christ, his Saviour and Lord. Eke’s introducing people to Jesus and helping them grow spiritually was a lifelong part of his life.
Throughout 34 years of pastoral service, Eke touched countless lives through his compassionate guidance and unwavering commitment to the churches he served across many states. His heartfelt sermons and genuine care for his congregations were hallmarks of his ministry. He retired from Northside Baptist Church as an Associate Pastor/Minister of Education in 2011.
Eke is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl (Sherry) Monfort Brown, alongside his children, Dr. Amy Brown and Zac Brown, who continue to carry forth his legacy of kindness and integrity. He is also survived by his siblings: sisters, Pamela Bennett, Becky Haney and husband Frank, and Lisa Hughes, as well as his brother, Robert (Doc) Esmond Brown II. Other family members include numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert Esmond Brown and Annie Pearl Brown, whose early influence shaped the values he held throughout his life.
Eke’s life was a testament to steadfast faith and sincere compassion. His enduring impact will be felt by all who knew him, and his memory will remain a cherished blessing to his family, friends, and congregation.
