Richard “Rusty” B. Zimmerman Jr. died peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia, after a short battle with cancer. He was 80.
Born in Americus, Georgia, he earned degrees from Georgia Southwestern University and the University of Georgia School of Law. He worked as a private attorney for more than 30 years in Columbus, GA before serving as a public defender for juvenile court—a job he considered the most rewarding of his career. He worked full time until the day he was hospitalized, with no intention of slowing down.
Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and boating. He had a lifelong appreciation for Marilyn Monroe, the music of Chicago, British sitcoms, and more than the occasional episode of NCIS.
In the final months of his life, Richard was especially grateful for the care and support of his son, Andrew, who was beside his side every day.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosalind T. Lipscomb; his father, Richard B. Zimmerman Sr.; and his sister, Rosalind Zimmerman Waddell.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Brenda Zimmerman; his son, Andrew Zimmerman; his niece, Adrienne Waddell Lemmond; and his nephew, Matthew Waddell.
