Bob Sistrunk passed away peacefully through the compassionate guiding hands of the professional and conscientious staff of Columbus Hospice, Monday, February 28, 2017.
Bob was born July 30,1927 in Durand Georgia to LaFayette and Helen Adams Sistrunk. He would have been 90 years old on his birthday this July. Bob's immediate family moved to Columbus in 1940. Upon graduation from Jordan High School in 1945, he joined the US Navy, serving our country during WW II and the Korean Conflict while in the South Pacific Ocean. Returning as a US Veteran, Bob graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Miami and purchased his first home in Columbus GA. His career centered on 40 years with the US Postal Service as Chief Engineer in the southeast region.
While on shore leave in 1949, he was swept off his feet by the love of his life, Norman Willene Phoenix. They were happily married for 67 years. As a charter member of Sherwood United Methodist, Bob and Willene volunteered their entire lives visiting, caring, consoling and being there for Sherwood Members and their Families when in need. Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman, handyman, gardener and never met a stranger. Bob was an accomplished cook and most times used fresh, preserved and canned vegetables and fruits from his own garden. He was a Friend to all and anyone touched by his kindness and empathy were better because if it.
He is survived by his only child, Robert Allen Sistrunk of Boca Raton, Fl: two sister-in-laws, Vera Phoenix Bullard of Kennesaw, GA: Sue Phoenix Belcher of Woodstock and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, parents and sisters Sara Sistrunk Johnson; Eleanor Sistrunk Hicks.
Bob never complained, always found solution and remained adaptable until his death. No one could have had a better Dad and a better friend than he was to his son.
Graveside services will be held this Friday, March 3, 2017 - 1:00 P.M .at Trinity United Methodist Church in Durand, GA.
