Robert L. Meadows, 85, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Columbus Hospice House.
Robert was born January 5, 1934 in Columbus, GA to the late Robert L. Meadows, Sr. and Mildred Wise Meadows. He worked with his brother on many newspaper routes in Columbus, GA around Beallwood and surrounding neighborhoods for the Ledger Enquirer. He won several prizes from the Ledger Enquirer for being such a hard working employee, ranging from bicycles to trips to Panama City Beach, FL.
He studied Drafting at Jordan High School and graduated 1953. With the Money he saved from his paper routes he enrolled at Georgia Tech and attend school from 1953-1955. He pledged Alpha Pi Epsilon and studied engineering but changed to Architecture. While there, he enjoyed dancing on the weekends. He was drafted into the Army in 1955 and was discharged in 1957. He completed basic training in Ft. Benning, GA but was sent to California for additional training. He went to Germany to build bridges for the Army, learned to speak German and enjoyed travelling and exploring while he was there. After being discharged from the Army he continued his career in civil services at Ft. Benning working as architecture. He attended Columbus College and received an Associate Degree of Arts. He then attended Georgia South Western in Americus, GA and received a degree in business in 1969. In late 1970 and early 80’s Robert worked on his Architecture Degree at Auburn University. He enjoyed his early college time in Atlanta, GA and made many long time friends. He spent many weekends throughout the years visiting those friends in Atlanta. He was involved in the Columbus Sailboat Club, JC’s, and the Georgia Canoe Association in Atlanta, GA. Robert met Janet Ford in early 1970, married in 1976 and began raising their family.
In mid 1980, Robert was in a movie with Patty Duke called “A time to triumph” for a brief moment.
Robert started his own drafting business, Meadows Drafting, where he drafted homes and home additions. In the 90s he and his friend John Logan became business partners so they could work on larger projects, such as commercial buildings, churches and house plans. He also worked for Steel Systems in Phenix City, AL in the mid 90s drawing steel buildings.
Besides his time in the Army, Robert took his wife and daughter to Switzerland in 1997 and in September 2001 he took his wife to Europe for a great multi-country trip. He enjoyed world history, traveling and learning new languages.
He enjoyed being a father but he really loved being a grandfather to Dustin. He was such an amazing example to Dustin.
