Rev Rodney B. Weiss Sr., a devoted family man, distinguished military veteran, and dedicated public servant, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Phenix City, Alabama, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on June 14, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island, Rodney’s life was marked by service, commitment, and love for those around him.
Rodney served honorably in the United States Army as part of the 25th Infantry Division, completing one tour in the Vietnam War. Following four years of Army service, he re-enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he dedicated 20 years as a Technical Sergeant before retiring. His military career was distinguished by numerous decorations, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm Device, and both Army and Air Force Good Conduct Medals, among others.
After his military career, Rodney transitioned to a significant role within the Muscogee County School District. He worked for over 17 years as a Fixed Asset Accountant, earning the respect of his colleagues and members of the Muscogee Association of Educational Professionals as well as the Georgia Association of Educational Office Professionals. His dedication to public service and education was unwavering, and he took pride in contributing to the community through his work.
Rodney was a man who valued family above all else. Known affectionately as “everyone’s dad,” he was renowned for his generosity, always willing to lend support to friends and loved ones in need. He cherished spending quality time with his family, often enjoying motorcycle rides and ensuring annual family vacations to Panama City, Florida. For decades, he and his family held season passes to Callaway Gardens, creating countless memories in the great outdoors.
His interests were as diverse as his life experiences. An avid motorcyclist, Rodney embraced the freedom of the open road whenever possible. He had a passion for collecting knives and enjoyed the simple pleasure of Starbucks coffee. His musical talents flourished from an early age; as a teenager, he played the saxophone in a band and continued to share his gift with others by playing the organ and piano at supper clubs and churches throughout his life.
A man of deep faith, Rodney was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, at the time of his passing. He was ordained as an independent Christian clergy member in December 2003 and served as Assistant Pastor of a Church of the Nazarene. His spiritual leadership extended into the motorcycle community as well, where he held positions such as Vice President and Treasurer of the Heaven Saints Motorcycle Ministries, reflecting his commitment to serving others through faith-based initiatives.
Rodney is survived by his children: Robert W. J. Weiss (Julian PA), June D. Ivey (Opelika, AL) Rodney B. Weiss Jr. (Midland MI) and Mary Helen Jarrell (Pittsview AL) his adopted granddaughter, Veronica E. Weiss (Phenix City Al); ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Weiss; his mother, Evelyn S. (Dudley) Weiss; his beloved wife, Jessie S. (Eiland) Weiss; and his son, William Weiss.
Family, friends, and community members are invited to honor Rodney’s life at the visitation taking place on May 12, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service on May 13, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m., both held at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Georgia.
