Ronald G. Sibold, 83, of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at his home surrounded by family. A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 2:00 pm at McMullen Funeral Home with David Nance and Greg Runnion officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at McMullen Funeral Home.
Ron was born November 24, 1935 in Charleston, West Virginia, son of the late James Franklin Sibold and Lucille Briscoe Sibold. He graduated from South Charleston High School in 1953, then received a B.S., Civil Engineering and Masters in Geology/Petroleum Engineering from Marshall University and University of Houston, respectively. From the Florida Institute of Technology, Ron was accredited in contract law, contract administration for executives, and contract negotiating.
He spent his entire career with the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1958-1994, working not only in the United States, but also in Germany, Japan, Korea, and Saudi Arabia. During this time, he received several high honors and service recognitions. After his retirement from The Corps of Engineers, he spent several years as an engineering consultant with various construction contractors.
Ron was a long-time member of Central Christian Church where he served as the Church Moderator, Deacon, and Property Chairman. He used his gifts and talents to oversee various projects and improvements for the church.
His true passion was for his family. Opa, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Whether they were doing projects such as building wind chimes, birdhouses, or scarecrows; picking up pine cones in the yard or taking trips to "Dr. Cook's" (Cook's Hot Dogs) for some medicine. It didn't really matter the activity as long as he could spend time with them. He also loved riding his motorcycle especially his "Father/Son" bike trips to places like Nova Scotia, Canada, Key West, Florida, and many winding mountain roads.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Sibold, and his son, Robert Calhoun. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jean Capps Sibold of Columbus, Georgia; 5 sons, Ron Sibold Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Randy Sibold (Maureen) of Frederick, MD, Blair Calhoun (Charlotte) of Columbus, GA, Dean Sibold (Sonja) of Springfield, VA, and Matt Calhoun (Christy) of Franklin, GA, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Calhoun of Columbus, GA. 1 Brother, Bob Sibold (Lynn) of Fort Collins, CO and 1 sister, Carolyn Adams of South Charleston, WV; 19 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Christian Church in his memory, 7775 Moon Road Columbus, GA 31909 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
