SFC (Ret.) Richard John Butcher, 72, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at his home.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. He will be interred at Fort Benning Cemetery in the columbarium. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
SFC (Ret.) Butcher was born May 22, 1947 in Willimantic, CT son of the late Richard Butcher and Genevieve Gancarz Butcher. He grew up in the beautiful Western New York countryside where his family had a dairy farm. After high school in which he excelled in sports earning the nickname "Touch," he joined the Army to serve his country. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served three tours in Vietnam retiring as a Sergeant First Class. He later worked for the New York State Department of Labor. He also graduated from St. Bonaventure with a Master's Degree in Counseling. Richard, his wife and children loved every place they had the privilege to live, Colorado, New Mexico, Georgia, New York and Germany. He enjoyed many things such as watching tennis, blues music, cars, and drag racing, communicating with his previous Army brothers (Jim, Ed, and Steve), thinking and dreaming. We will all miss his dearly.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Eugenia Hadley and Rosana Pangborn.
Survivors include his wife Jennifer Brown Butcher, son, Seth Butcher (Anna Cutuli), daughter, Betsy Burns (Jacob), sisters, Mary Asher and Joyce Hall, and six grandchildren, Jarrett Butcher, Becca Burns, Veronica Butcher, Rachel Burns, Gavin Butcher, Milo Burns.
