Sheryl Smith Blanton, affectionately known as Sherry or Mamaluski was born on September 21, 1947, in Columbus, Georgia to Travis Jackson Smith and Marilyn June Smith. Her father was in the Air Force and she lived in many places. Germany was her favorite as she recalls all the "good" chocolates and beautiful scenery. Her favorite memories were of Nanny cooking meals for military families in need. She and Debe would deliver them. Sherry departed this life peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Columbus, Georgia, after bravely facing complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 - 7:30 PM Thursday, May 22, 2025 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31904.
Sherry dedicated many years of her professional life to civil service at Fort Benning, where she became known for her unwavering commitment and spirited demeanor. It is here that she met Barbara Pigg who led her to Jesus. Her career took a heartfelt turn when she joined Edgewood Baptist Church as the personal secretary to Brother David Howle, where she was lovingly remembered not only as an adept secretary but also as the cherished supplier of all things chocolate for him. Brother David passed away the day after her. She prepared his place for him, caring for him as she always did. Following her time at the church, she served as an executive secretary at Cott Beverages and later at Total Systems until her well-deserved retirement.
A person of immense generosity, Sherry filled her life with creativity and warmth. She loved to dance. As a teen she enjoyed many dances at "The Hangout" in PCB, wearing rollers in her hair at the beach all day to prepare. She had a passion for painting, hanging wallpaper, and refurbishing furniture, as well as a wide array of crafts, including sewing and cross-stitching. Her talents were thoughtfully displayed in her home, which was always open to family and friends alike. Known for her culinary skills, Sherry delighted in cooking and baking, creating a welcoming atmosphere that drew everyone in. She loved her Hailey bug and spoke often of her late puppers, Sophie and Abbie.
An avid gardener, Sherry had an extraordinary ability to nurture plants, attributing her success to her "secret" milorganite. Her gardens, which she tirelessly worked on, were her sanctuary — a place of happiness and tranquility that reflected her nurturing spirit. Antiquing was another of her beloved hobbies, allowing her a chance to enjoy the stories behind the treasures she collected.
Above all, Sherry's love for her children and grandchildren was the pinnacle of her existence. She consistently put her family first and approached life with a grace that rarely wavered. Her kindness, cheerful demeanor, and sense of humor were enduring traits that made her easy to love. Even in her final days, Sherry maintained her spirit of giving, selflessly sharing desserts and treats with fellow residents on the memory care unit. In her mind, she envisioned renovating her home and offered everyone around her food, drinks, and her skilled advice on decoration choices.
Sherry had a profound love for the Lord and was always eager to share her faith with those around her. Her words of encouragement inspired many, even in the end as she reassured hospital staff, "If you would just put your trust in him, He will take such good care of you."
She is survived by her loving daughter, Kimberly June Kannady Hall; her son, Kenneth David Kannady; her son, Christopher Michael Blanton; and her cherished grandsons, James Robert Hall II and Travis Boyd Hall. Sherry also leaves behind her sister, Debe Smith Stricklin, and her nephew, Kenneth Ryan Slade Stricklin.
Sheryl Smith Blanton’s legacy is that whatever setting you met her in, church, work or socially, her generous spirit, contagious laughter, warm smile and sparkling eyes were always attributes you could count on. It was impossible to be in a bad mood around her! She was easy to love!
