Susan Frazer Boyter, affectionately known from early childhood as “Buden” by her sisters, as “Frazer” to her lifelong friends, and as “Bebe” to her beloved granddaughters, was born on March 24, 1939, in Atlanta, GA, to Hazel and Alan Frazer, as their middle child. She died on April 16, in Columbus, GA, at Columbus Hospice.

She had been a resident of Columbus for the greatest part of her life, since her early days at Wynnnton Elementary. She and her friends moved on to Columbus High, where they added to their close group of friends, and she excelled as a student and as a leader in her class.

College days were spent at Shorter College in Rome, GA, where she majored in English. She began her teaching career at her old alma mater, Columbus High. After obtaining a degree in Counseling at Columbus State, she joined the counseling staff at Hardaway High School, where she remained until her retirement in 1999. She later joined the counseling staff at Carver High School for a time when they were short of staff. She became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers’ honorary society; Chapter 18 of the UDC; The George Walton Chapter of the DAR; and The Order of the Tartan.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, for over 70 years, and she sang in the choir for most of that time, from her teenage years onward. She loved singing and was sad to have to give it up due to her illness. She indulged her love of music by attending concerts whenever possible.

Her adult life can best be described as a travelogue. She flew from the tombs of Egypt to the realm of the Dalai Lama and from the Land of the Rising Sun to the shores of Australia, and to almost every point in between. She was an avid and lifelong “card shark”, excelling in her beloved game of bridge, which she played to the very end. Her collections, of canes, umbrellas, objets d’art, paintings, and Beatrix Potter, among others, were legendary.

Buden adored animals, particularly dogs; and whenever she traveled, she was always on the lookout for people with dogs. She was a person of many and varied interests, and she read incessantly. Her Scottish heritage was very important to her, and she traveled extensively in Scotland. If there were such a thing as a “Woman for All Seasons,” she would definitely qualify.

She was married to the late Jon Matthews in 1967, and after his death, to Tom Boyter, who is the father of her two sons.

Buden is survived by her sons, Joel Boyter of Columbus, GA, and Will (Pat) Boyter of Dallas, GA; by her two sisters, Jane Frazer of Atlanta and Judy Frazer Brouillette of Columbus; by two granddaughters, Jillian and Maryn Boyter; a niece, Leslie (Casey) Caylor; her “third sister”, Lisa Boyter (Bryan) Hendrix; several cousins and other relatives, as well as a host of dearly-loved friends.

A memorial service will be held at McMullen Funeral Home on May 9, 2026. The visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. till 2:00, with the service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the family plot in Grantville City Cemetery in Grantville, GA, beside her Holloway grandparents.
