Thomas James Prescott (Tommy) completed his long goodbye on April 29, 2025. He was surrounded by love throughout his journey with early onset Alzheimer's and love continued to surround him as he took his last breath on this earth.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the church.
Tommy was the son of the late Jim and Jeanne Prescott. He was born on October 24, 1954 in Columbus, GA and spent most of his life there. As a boy, Tommy developed a love for the outdoors. He spent many hours in the woods growing up, both in the Columbus area and at the family farm in Wrens, GA. Tommy learned to hunt and fish at an early age and the outdoors became a life long passion. He spent countless hours in the woods or on the water with family and friends. Educated in Columbus, Tommy graduated from Hardaway High School and Columbus College (now Columbus State University). He loved his community and began working in banking shortly after graduation from college. He worked at what was then known as First National Bank of Columbus and continued to be friends with many of those colleagues after switching to what is now known as Synovus Financial Corporation. Most of his career was spent at Synovus, where he retired as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Tommy was known for his ethics, intelligence, and his calm demeanor. He retired in 2016. He served the community in a variety of ways. He served on many boards and committees: Family Life Center, Columbus Country Club, Tower Society of CSU, Board of Trustees for Huntington College, St. Luke United Methodist Church and the United Way to name a few. His family remembers less visible moments of service as a strength of Tommy's character. Whether making impromptu care packages for the unhoused, discreetly supporting a student's education, or financing and participating in yearly shopping trips to provide Christmas presents for another family, Tommy was quiet and unassuming in his generosity. The great love of Tommy's life was his family, dear friends and his dogs.
He met his wife, Nancy, shortly after graduating from college. They began a love story that spanned almost 50 years. They married in the fall of 1982, the wedding scheduled around hunting season and the Georgia Bulldogs football schedule. They later welcomed two daughters to their family and Tommy's pride and devotion to them has never been questioned. He passed on his love for the outdoors to his daughters. The family spent many weekends and holidays at their home on Lake Martin in Alabama, enjoying water sports, skiing, boating, and fireworks. They also enjoyed many family trips both abroad and in the US. Those trips provided lasting memories. Tommy and Nancy continued to travel even after his diagnosis. They enjoyed biking trips, hiking trips, excursions to Mexico, Europe, Peru, Ecuador, Canada, California, Oregon and North Dakota. They also spent many happy hours on St. George Island, FL where family and friends often joined them. In 2023, they moved to be closer to family in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received excellent medical care.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Nancy. Two daughters, Riley Gilbert (Kyle)of Lexington, SC and Blair Prescott (Andy Kahrs Erickson) of Nashville, TN. Two grandchildren, Trenton and Ashlynn Gilbert. His sister, Margie Swint (Ruben). Brothers-in-Law, David Toney (Debbie), Rodney Toney (Faye), Wayne Toney (Gloria). Numerous nieces and nephews and cherished cousins and friends. Tommy was known for his work ethic, loyalty, love of his dogs, and wicked humor.
