Thurman Russell Shaw, 86, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, October 26, 2017. Visitation will be held Friday, November 3, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA. 31907. A graveside service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Parkhill Cemetery 4161 Macon Rd. Columbus, Ga 31907. A reception will be held following at the home of Ms. Massiah.
Thurman Russell Shaw was born August 27, 1931, near Lumber City, Ga., to James Edward and Menettie Viola (Powell) Jones Shaw. He graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he later served on the alumni committee. He was a member of the Woodman of the World Fraternal Lodges in Alma, Mcrae and Columbus, Ga. and Phoenix, Az. and St. Mark UMC, where he served as a board member. He was a teacher; basketball official; lending officer and insurance agent. He retired from Woodman of the World Life Insurance Co. where he was a salesman; and local and state manager. He won numerous awards for his sales success. He loved fishing and sports spectating.
He was widowed by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Ruth Irvin. He is survived by his children, Thurman Russell, Jr. (Rusty), Elizabeth Massiah (Libby), Edward and his wife Jennifer; and Robert (Bull); his grandchildren Jamie Ross, Janice Dukes; Courtney Shaw, Terry Short, Marcia Shaw, Cole Shaw, and Jackie and Jared Rogers and Great Grandchildren, Lily Pond, Lily Dukes and Dakota and Connor Gerrits; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.
