William James "Bill" Frazier, Ph. D., widower of Sandra Barton Frazier, died on October 1st at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, Georgia.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 5, 2019 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd Columbus, Ga. 31907. The family will receive friends following the services at the funeral home.
Bill was the son of the late James Frazier and Sarah Frazier. He was a graduate of Furman University and earned his graduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bill taught geology at Columbus State University for more than 40 years and was one of the founding faculty members of the original Department of Chemistry and Geology. Bill was proud of the role that he was able to play in the school's growth into the institution it is today, serving in a number of leadership roles that helped shape the current Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) and the university as a whole. He served as director of the Environmental Science program and later as chairman of the ESS from 2011 until 2015. He received the school's Educator of the Year Award in 1985.
He loved his students and his colleagues. He fed a lifelong hunger for learning with study of art, literature, music, science, and anything else that was written in a book within arm's reach.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Erin Frazier Noyes, his son Bruce Frazier, his grandson Jack Noyes, brother-in-law David Barton (Amy), and sister-in-law Deborah Barton Felts (Bob).
In lieu of flowers, Bill's favorite charities were the Sierra Club, the ACLU, and the Southern Poverty Law Center and also a scholarship in Bill's honor, the William J. Frazier Scholarship in Earth and Space Sciences at CSU.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hamilton Medical Center for their extraordinary care for Bill. We will miss the incredible meals Dad cooked on Saturdays and the way he danced to 1960s rock and roll in the kitchen while preparing them. And we'll miss the long, winding conversations afterwards lasting ate into the night.
