B.F. Young, Jr.

B.F. Young, Jr., 84, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, at his home with his family by his side.

Mr. Young was born on August 20, 1936, in Columbus, Georgia, son of the late B.F. Young, Sr. and Sara Alice Andrews Young.  After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1960, and the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1962.  He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from East Tennessee State University and a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Georgia Southwestern State University.

After college graduation, Mr. Young worked for the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Royal Crown Cola Company, J.P. Stevens & Company, eventually working for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in 1970 as Superintendent of four state parks.  After retiring from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in 1982, Mr. Young became a State-Certified Real Estate Appraiser, working for his parent’s business, Southeastern Appraisal Company, later becoming its owner and president in 1985.

Mr. Young was an avid outdoorsman who spent much of his time in nature with his family and the many dogs he had over the years.  He enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, boating/sailing, riding his bicycle and motorcycle, birdwatching, traveling, swimming and snorkeling, summer trips to the beach, and watching his two grandchildren play youth sports.  He also enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to music.  Anyone who knew Mr. Young knew he was the most loving and kind-hearted person you could meet.  

Other than his parents, Mr. Young was predeceased by his brother, Robert Edward Young and his sisters, Barbara Young Preston and Elizabeth Young Thomas.  He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anita Brown Young of Columbus, Georgia; daughter Elizabeth Young Hammock and her husband Rodney of Phenix City, Alabama; son, Stephen Young and his wife Becky of Columbus, Georgia; and two loving grandchildren, Brooke and Holt Young.

A visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Georgia 31907, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Shane Green officiating.  Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we encourage everyone to make the best decisions to remain safe.  If anyone wishes to attend the visitation and/or memorial service, please remember to remain six feet apart from those not in your household and wear personal protective equipment.
