Barbara "Betty" Newman

Barbara “Betty” Newman, 96, of Columbus, GA peacefully passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 at her residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Friday, May 7, 2021 at St. Anne Catholic Church 2000 Kay Cir, Columbus, GA 31907, with Father Paul Pantiru officiating.  A rosary will be held 6:00 PM Thursday, May 6, 2021 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the rosary at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.  In keeping with the efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing will be required during the mass, visitation and the rosary.

Barbara was born December 24, 1924 in Seeshaupt, Germany to the late Raymund Schmöeller and Maria (Hofer) Schmöeller. She was a homemaker, founding member of St. Anne Catholic Church and worked as a salesperson.  She loved spending time with her family and playing cards. Other than her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Newman and son, Raymond Newman.

She is survived by her son, Robert Newman (Susan) of League City, TX, daughter-in-law, Lola Newman of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Khristina Gallagher (Ian) of Colbert, GA, Jessica Carden (Wade) of Columbus, GA, great-grandchildren, Hanna Bundrick of Auburn, AL and Noah Gallagher of Colbert, GA, nieces, Thelma Cassel (Walter) and Shirley Payne both of Columbus, GA, Marie Steinsberger of Clermont, GA, and numerous other relatives in Germany.  She was cared for in her final months by two loving caregivers, Bren Moultrie and Monica Evans.
