Dr. Lorraine Brown departed this life suddenly on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Piedmont Northside Hospital. While she ran a successful weight loss practice in Columbus, GA she was a resident of Talbot County, GA where she also had an Internal Medicine practice. This was her first love; she ministered to the seniors in that community and cared for them greatly.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents and an older brother who died at a young age. Her early education was characteristic of the person she was to become. She attended the Brearley School, a private college preparatory school for girls in her hometown of New York City. This foundation, along with her home training, allowed her to develop a number of skills and personal values that made her a great friend and endeared her to those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
If you got arrested in NYC between 1974 and 1975 chances are that she might have fingerprinted you. And speaking of fingers, you might have noticed that she was always well manicured. This is probably a throwback from her early, though short-lived administrative days. She served her country as a non-commissioned officer, a Senior Counselor for 4 years and was assigned to Panama. She returned to the states following her father’s death. After service, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Marymount Manhattan College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, she was a Curian scholar, a member of the Dean’s List, and Alpha Chi Honor Society, she received Departmental Honorable Mention, as well as being listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was a recipient of the Silver “M” Service Award. These are just a few of her accolades. In her undergraduate days you might have encountered her as a member of the fencing team, the statistician for the volleyball and softball teams or on the basketball, or track team.
She began her transition to medicine as an Admitting Supervisor at Mt. Siani Medical Center in Manhattan, then as an administrative aid for the Directors of the Coronary Care & Telemetry units. She attended Cornell University Medical College where her main interests were Gastroenterology and Geriatrics and studied Clinical Nutrition at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her studies were however interrupted by her mother’s death. She did not stray far from medicine. She worked in the ENT and Pediatric Hematology\Oncology departments. She returned to medicine and completed her training at Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx she was anything but idle, participating as a research assistant in both the Infectious Disease and Neurology departments.
She was recruited to Columbus Medical Associates by Dr. Howard C. Willis in Columbus, Georgia. She opened a private practice in Internal Medicine in Talbot County and became the Medical Director of the Talbot County EMS. The community that she loved and cared for will be holding a Memorial Service for her 12:00 PM Friday, November 17, 2023 at the community center in Geneva, GA. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday November 17, 2023 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Her sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will be having a private ceremony following the visitation at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 18, 2023 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2100 Hilton Ave, Columbus, GA 31906. Interment will be held 12:00 PM, Monday, November 20, 2023 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, 553 AL-165, Fort Mitchell, AL 36856. Please join us for 1 or all portions of this remembrance.
So it is left to those patients that she cared for, and her many friends, to remember her legacy and many contributions to Talbot and Muscogee Counties.
