James Phenix Obituary

James Earl Phenix, 90, of Columbus, GA died peacefully January 7, 2021 at Piedmont Midtown Hospital. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907, with Dr. Don Wilhite officiating. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we encourage everyone to make the best decisions to remain safe. If anyone wishes to attend the services, please remember to remain 6 feet apart from those not in your household and wear personal protective equipment.

Mr. Phenix was born March 31, 1930 to the late Alex Phenix and Eva Mae Poore Phenix. Earl loved his country and served in the Navy for nine years and the Air Force for 11 years. One of the highlights of his life was when he and his wife Mildred adopted their son Jimmy while Earl was stationed in Japan. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for Hecht Company in Columbus, Civil Service at Fort Benning, and was also a crossing guard for the Muscogee County School System. Earl loved the Lord and served faithfully as a Deacon and held other positions at Calvary Baptist Church. Earl loved traveling the country with his wife Mildred and her sisters and their husbands. Other activities Earl enjoyed where fishing, fast pitch softball, dominoes, bingo, horseshoes, and Alabama Football.

Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Watkins Phenix; his second wife, Connie Lee Phenix; sisters, Peggy Phenix Welch, Agnes Phenix Martin; and brother, Horace E. ”Joe” Phenix.

Survivors include his son, James Edmerson Phenix (Susan) of Phenix City, AL; sister, Robbie Phenix Conway of Columbus, GA; brother-in-law, Delmar Martin of Phenix City, AL; and many loving nieces,nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the Gardens of Calvary for all of the love and care they have given Earl the last four years.
