James (Jim) Hickman Obituary

James (Jim) Wilson Hickman, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on September 2, 2022. 

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 30, 2022 at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery. Funeral procession will gather at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907, at 10:15am and then proceed to the graveside service.

Jim was born February 9, 1933 in Stills Crossroads, Alabama to the late Molly Sikes Hickman and James Clifton Hickman.  Jim grew up around Smut Eye, south of Union Springs.  He graduated from Inverness High School in 1951.  Upon graduation he worked for the Alabama Department of Transportation.  He was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 where he honorably served his country for 20 years. Jim held several positions from infantry, mechanic foreman, quarter master and member of the Inspector General Team.  He served three tours to Germany where he met the love of his life Christine, one tour to Korea and two tours to Vietnam in defense of our nation. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, including one for valor, Army Commendation Medal, 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster.  He retired from the Army in 1973.  After leaving the Army, Jim worked for Georgia Power for 17 years as a mechanic and garage logistics manager.  He also completed an Associate’s Degree in Business from Chattahoochee Valley Community College. He retired from Georgia Power in 1992.

Other than his parents Jim is preceded in death by his, step-mother, Mary Lou Hickman and nine brothers and sisters. 

He is survived by his wife, Christine Hickman, children, Doris Wall, Bobby Hickman, Don Hickman (Jeannie), Ron Hickman (Charlotte) and Steve Hickman (Kathy) along with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
