James "Jim" Weldy Obituary

James “Jim” Bert Weldy, (Retired CSM), 86, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 in Columbus, Georgia.

Funeral Services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Britt David Baptist Church, 2801 W. Britt David Rd., Columbus, GA. 31909 with Rev. Dr. Tim Jones officiating. Interment will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA. 31907. In keeping with the efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing will be required during visitation and funeral services.

Jim was the son of the late Raymond Bert Weldy and Cora Anna Highley Weldy Hill and was born October 27, 1934 in Peirce City, Missouri. He grew up in Peirce City, Missouri, and Neodesha, Kansas, and graduated from Fredonia, Kansas High School in 1952.  In November of 1954, he went into the United States Army where he served for the next 26 years and 8 months, retiring on August 1, 1981 as a Command Sergeant Major, and having made almost one hundred parachute jumps.

On July 26, 1959, he married the love of his life, Carrol Deane Gardner, daughter of Oscar Deane Gardner and Edna Carol Lee.  After his retirement, he attended Columbus College and received a Bachelor of Administration in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Business Management.  He then served, for the next 10 years, as Executive Director of the Interfaith Food Bank. He was a faithful member of Britt David Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Bible study teacher and Sunday School director. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and three sisters: Maxine Main, Jean Hermesello and Donna Todd.

He is survived by his wife, Carrol Deane Gardner Weldy; sons, James David Weldy and his wife Laura (Kendall) of St. Simons Island, GA; Martin Deane Weldy and his wife Florence (Upshaw) of Columbus, GA; Brian Lee Weldy and his wife Cindi Lee (Draper) of Williamsburg, VA; Dennis Michael Weldy and his wife Christy (Battles) of Huntsville, AL; one grandaughter, Charisma Weldy; two sisters,  Betty Boman, and Glenna Harris and her husband Cliff;  and a host of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Britt David Baptist Church or to Brown Bag of Columbus.
