John Roney Obituary

John Samuel Roney, Jr., 63, of Columbus, Georgia died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House.

The memorial service for Sam will be Monday, November 14 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2100 Hilton Avenue, Columbus, Georgia 31906 with the Reverend Jeff Jackson of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Hamilton, Georgia officiating. Also participating will be the Reverend J. Brady Baird of Summerville United Methodist Church, Phenix City, Alabama.

Sam, a native of Columbus, was born to John Samuel Roney, Sr. and Charlene Waddle Roney Burkett on February 22, 1953. His sister, Ann Roney Davis, preceded him in death. He completed his undergraduate degree at Columbus State University and continued graduate work at Georgia State and Florida State Universities. His major areas of study include music education with primary instruments of voice, organ, and piano and continued graduate work in organ, church music, choral conducting, and middle grade education.

Sam taught 15 years in public schools in Muscogee County, Ft. Benning Schools, and an additional 4 years of teaching abroad for Department of Defense Schools in Germany. He taught Jr. High Choral Music, Elementary Music, 3 years of 5th grade, 2 years of 7th grade, and one year of 8th. Sam ended his teaching career on the Fine Arts Staff of Calvary Christian School, Columbus.

Sam began his work in music ministry at the age of 16 and served as organist of Asbury United Methodist Church, Columbus, Georgia. He served as Music Director of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, Georgia for 6 years, where he was also an active church member. He has served in many other local churches throughout his tenure in music ministry and has held positions as Director of Music, Organist-Choirmaster, Organist, Pianist, Soloist, and Cantor at the Jewish temple, Temple Israel, in Columbus, Georgia. He was also a member of the American Guild of Organists. Sam concluded his professional career at Summerville United Methodist Church, Phenix City, Alabama where he continued to share his faith, love of music, and God-given gifts even in the midst of illness.

Sam was a mentor, teacher, companion, confidante, and beloved friend to many. His bright smile and hearty laugh would fill the room with God's love and light. He never met a stranger, and was ever ready to engage in conversation. He shared his love of music with thousands of men, women, and children over his lifetime, encouraging them to use their gifts to praise Almighty God. Now Sam sings in the saintly choir of the Lord.

He leaves so many friends who were his surrogate family, most especially Carolyn Phillips of Columbus, Georgia, who cared for Sam in his final years and was his faithful friend and companion for many years.
