MSG (Ret) Jerry Minick Herlong was born on July 13, 1950 in Lake City, Florida. After graduating from Ft White High School, he was drafted into the military. He had a long career in the US Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He served in Korea and Germany as well as at several stateside locations.
After retiring from the Army, he continued working at Kodak as a warehouseman. He retired completely at the age of 61.
Jerry spent most weekends with his love, the Flint River. An avid camper and fisherman, he enjoyed the social life and comradery found in the campgrounds. He made many good friends. He also enjoyed NASCAR and football.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Maxine Herlong, and his brother Jack. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Caroline; brothers Dan, Bob and Mike Herlong, and sister Kathie Townsend; children David Herlong, Chris Hessley (Jason), Danielle Woods, Michelle Herlong, and Eleanor Woods. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Andersonville National Cemetery, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. In keeping with the efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing will be required during the graveside service.
