Mary Carol Fountain Clemmons Obituary

Mary Carol Fountain Clemmons, 89, passed away Friday, July 29, 2022 at Thrive at Green Island. She lived her life as most aspire to do.  A supportive and strong wife, loving and attentive Mother of three and doting Grandmother and Great Grandmother.  Her compassion for others and honest demeanor will always be admired traits remembered by those she knew casually, and treasured by those very few that are fortunate enough to be called her friends.

She is survived by her sons Joseph “Bill” Clemmons (Susan), Alex “Jeff” Clemmons (Theresa); daughter, Susan “Tami” Maguire (Joseph); grandchildren, Joshua William Clemmons (Katie), Christopher Joseph Clemmons (Nyru), Lyndsey Carol Veroneau, Joseph Wilson Sutton (Kimberlee); great grandchildren, Charlotte Clemmons, Olivia Clemmons, Nora Clemmons, Lillian Veroneau, and Emilia Veroneau.

Carol was born December 4, 1932 in Wilmington, NC to the late Clayton William Fountain and Mary Holly Fountain.  Other than her parents she is preceded in death by her husband CW4 Joseph Emanuel Clemmons and sister, Patricia Ellen Fountain-Manning.

On August 14th 1952, Carol married Joseph (Joe) Emanuel Clemmons in the town of her birth (Wilmington North Carolina) and began her life’s journey from her Southern home, to distant homes in Europe, and Asia.  Each destination presented her with new challenges, and each was met with a fierce determination to preserve her faith and family.  Upon returning to the United States, Carol worked for the Department of Defense as a Protocol Officer for many years.  While in this role, she was a founding member of and Inaugural President of the Warrant Officers Wives Association (WOWA).  She served on many boards, and made numerous contributions to the WOWA.  She is remembered fondly by those she mentored and served with.

After many years and too many miles to count; Joe kept his long standing promise to Carol and brought her back to her beloved South to live out her days with her husband Joe and her oldest son Bill’s beautiful family.  In addition to being an avid reader, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing bridge.

Over the years the family had many pets (her “furry children” as she referred to them with a wink and a smile) some traveled with the family overseas, and others spent the years by her side in Arizona and Georgia.  She loved the Beach with its warm sand and gentle waves to walk beside, and find the occasional sand dollar or two.  She loved to sit on her screened-in back porch with Joe and bird watch and laugh about days gone by, and the many adventures lived and adversities avoided with a little luck, a lot of faith and the Grace of God.

Their Southern home in Columbus, Georgia would be their last.  Their beautiful family grown now, with families of their own and memories to be made.  They both can rest knowing, that all of it is as it should be, and God will guide them and keep them safe.

Until we laugh and hug again…
