Monica Yancy Obituary

On Wednesday, March 10, 2024, our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother, Monica Rowe Yancy, passed away unexpectedly. Her longtime close friend of 20 years Edwina Bryant, was by her side.

Monica Retonia Rowe of Rex, Georgia was born March 31, 1968 in Gainesville, Florida, and raised by Barbara and Frezell Rowe Sr. in Lake City, Florida. Monica was loved by everyone she met, and her outgoing personality allowed her to be involved in various sports, pageants, and the arts during her childhood. Her beautiful smile, sense of humor, and infectious laughter always lit up the room. Monica's determination led her to graduate from Columbia County High School. She then joined The United States Marine Corps, where she proudly served for 8 years. After her military service, she became a Georgia Board certified Pharmacy Technician Instructor and worked as an Outpatient Pharmacy Customer Service Representative at the VA Hospital in Decatur, GA. Monica represented her country with pride, always saying, "Once a Marine, always a Marine, until the day I die." She had a passion for travel and enjoyed cooking, dancing, and singing. Monica served the Lord with her unwavering dedication to helping people in any capacity possible.

Monica is preceded in death by her Grandmother Rosa Sheppard, Father Clinton Newton Jr. (Karen), Brother Clinton Newton III (Brandy), and Sister Kayla Newton.

During her marriage to John Yancy (late Faye), Monica was blessed with one child. She leaves behind her only daughter, Britney Lewis (Aaron II), and her beloved grandchildren, Leah, Zoe, Aaron David III, and Elainor. Monica is survived by her mother, Barbara Rowe (Frezell Sr.); step-mother, Karen Newton (late Clinton Jr.); sisters, Zeathia Link (Pervis), Kimbreia Newton, Kara Newton; brothers, Frezell Rowe Jr., Christopher Daniels (Chantal); nieces, Deniea Allen, Barbara Allen, Daneika Allen, Jonelle Lee, Channah Daniels, Whytnee Newton, Taylor Hunter; nephews, Frezell Rowe III, Christopher Daniels Jr., Justin Mitchell Jr., Clinton Newton IV, Christefer Mitchell, Quinton Newton, Brandon Newton; aunts, Shirley Mullens (Reginald), Debra Camiel (late Henry), Valerie Roebuck, Alida Gaskins; uncle, Alexander Sheppard Jr. (Cassandra); and extended family and friends.

Monica had a deep love for butterflies, as they symbolized her personal journey in life. Her daughter, Britney, shares a heartfelt poem in her memory:

 "My Beautiful Butterfly"

My beautiful butterfly, I hate to see you go. Flying towards the sunlight, I didn't understand, but now I know.

Your colorful wings are fluttering,

Through the wind and the sky.

Your memories will help me,

 Get through my goodbyes.

The earth was your chrysalis,

Before you took flight.

My heart is now heavy every single night.

I have to navigate life without you, And I don't know how.

But I find comfort in knowing, You're with Jesus now.

You won't be here to see me and your grandkids physically grow,

But we will keep you in our hearts,

And take you wherever we go.
-Britney Lewis
