Mr. John T. Middlebrooks, III, affectionately known as "Sonny," passed away on May 7, 2023, in Columbus, Georgia.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Sonny was born December 26, 1941, in Barnesville, GA to the late John Thomas Middlebrooks, Jr. and Frances Smith Middelbrooks. Sonny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. Sonny attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, and was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon After graduation; he proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his military service, Sonny embarked on a long, successful career in sales, holding various positions with CB&T, the LPGA Tour, and The Gillette Company. After retiring from Gillette, Sonny continued to work in golf-related sales positions, combining his passion for the sport with his professional skills.
Sonny was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Green Island Country Club. He enjoyed many years at the club, and numerous golf trips to Florida, Highlands, and Linville, North Carolina. Sonny's love for the game was matched only by his quick wit and for the camaraderie with his fellow golfers.
In addition to his love for golf, Sonny was passionate about volunteering, most notably The Wynnton Neighborhood Network and Meals on Wheels. His dedication and hard work in these organizations were a testament to his commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around him. Sonny's generosity extended beyond his family and friends, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Sonny is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Susan Middlebrooks, sons, John T. “Tom” Middelbrooks, IV “Tom” (Leslie), Bart Middlebrooks (Clara), grandchildren, Amelia, Mary Grace, Susan, Martin, sisters, Ellen Granum and Julie Whitten. His generosity and love for his family were evident in every aspect of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sonny's memory to St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Wynnton Neighborhood Network, or charity of your choice.
