Ollireid Doty Obituary

Ollireid New Doty, 94, died in Columbus, Georgia following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Irving Wakeman Doty, and her parents, Rebecca Marchman New and Stephen Florence New.

A Savannah native, Ollie was a graduate of Savannah High School and received an Associate Degree from Armstrong Junior College. Before her marriage she worked at Hunter Air Force Base during World War II and for the "new" Social Security. She and her parents were active in the USO during World War II and received military commendations for their efforts.

Ollie was a wife, mother and homemaker in the truest sense: cooking, baking, sewing, nurturing, entertaining and welcoming. As a Savannah girl, she was trained in gracious living. Use your silver and china; prepare meals from scratch with fresh ingredients; make the plate color pleasing; present yourself well; mind your manners; and get your education. Over the many years of their marriage, Ollie and Irving quietly helped many offering a meal to share, guidance, or a place to stay.

Miss Ollie, as she came to be known, was a longtime member of Robert McIntire Methodist Church, Savannah where she served for many years as church secretary, was an active member of a Circle of the United Methodist Women.

Later in her life, dachshunds became part of her family. Abby, her most recent pup, was her companion in her last years in Savannah and for six years at Spring Harbor. They were a tag team, Ollie & Abby.

She is survived by her two devoted daughters, Janet Doty Beall (Bruce Beall) and Pat Doty Daniel (Stephen Hodges) & their daughter, Myriam Dahamna. In addition, she is survived by an extended family who fondly called her Grandma Ollie: Ida Solomon Durand (Dottie & Daniels); Alex & Hanna Beall (Chloe, Camden & Isla); David & Alyson Beall (Trent & Noah) and Ryan Godfrey (Shelby & Mason Roberts) and Erin Hodges. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church, Columbus at 1pm, Friday, September 22, 2017 with a reception following. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11 am at Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia.
