Robert Ford George Jr., also known as “Buck” to his family and friends, passed away peacefully of natural causes in his home, surrounded by his family, on April 13, 2024, in Columbus, GA.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April, 19th at 2:00 PM in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA, 31907 with the visitation one hour prior to services. A private interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery.

 Born on May 02, 1934, in Roanoke, AL, Robert was the oldest of twelve siblings, a role he embraced, as family was always a priority and defined his entire life. Robert's early years were spent in Columbus, where he graduated from Jordan Vocational High School. His quest for knowledge and skill development led him to further his education at Chattahoochee Valley Community College, where he earned an Associate Degree of Applied Science. His commitment to lifelong learning was an inspiration to all who knew him. Robert answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Nantahala. His military awards and decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, the National Service Ribbon, and the Navy Occupational Service Medal. His time in the Navy imbued him with a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried into his civilian life. Upon returning to civilian life, Robert began a distinguished career with Norfolk Southern, where he dedicated 33 years of loyal service before retiring as a Terminal Train Master. His work ethic and leadership were unparalleled, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Beyond his professional endeavors, Robert was a man of many passions. He loved the art of dance, teaching ballroom dancing classes with a grace and enthusiasm that brought joy to many. His voice could often be heard leading a rousing karaoke session at the Fox Senior Center, where he was beloved. Robert's passion for dance extended to square dancing, where he not only participated, but was a member of the National Federation. He achieved the notable distinction of earning a Bachelor of Square Dancing. Robert's selflessness was further evidenced by his dedication to volunteer work. His efforts were recognized with a volunteer award in 2009, and once more in 2016, showcasing his unwavering commitment to giving back to the community that he held so dear. He was a man who continuously put others before himself, making a profound impact on the lives he touched.

Robert is survived by his daughters, Teresa George Smith (Tom), Sheri George; grandchildren, Dustin Tyler Smith (Sarah), Kaitlyn Elizabeth Smith (Brandon); siblings, Annie Mae Rose, Louise Ensor, Vicky George, Ricky George and many loving nieces and nephews.
