Willie Boyd Harris

Willie Boyd Harris was born in Wablikin, Germany on February 8, 1951, and died June 28, 2021 as a result of colon cancer.

A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery with Rev. Mike McBride officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Willie was called Billy by all who knew him. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church IN Americus, GA. He attended Staley High School but attained a GED during his first year in the military. He entered the Army in 1968 and re-enlisted twice. After leaving the military he lived in Indianapolis, IN for a few rears. He was married for a brief period but divorced. Billy returned to Americus in the early 80’s and attended South Georgia Technical School. During his lifetime he worked in private investigation hospitality automotive, horticulture and the construction industry. He retired from final job at Jones Quality Paint & Body in September 2020.

Billy was a natural artist thus begins painting and drawing around the age of five. At Staley High School as a member of the band, he played the trumpet. He was chosen by the military to play “Taps” at funerals whenever a serviceman was unavailable.

His favorite pastime was fishing which he learned from his grandmother Julia K. Gordon.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents SFC (Ret) Rev. Dan W. Harris and Alberta M. Harris, sister Shawn M. Harris.

He is survived by his sister, Angela J. Paden of Midland, GA, aunt, Gladys Forster of Cordele, GA, uncle, James A. Harris of Cordele, GA and a host of cousins and friends. The family would like a special acknowledgment to the following; Richard Jones and family, Mrs. Betty Milner, Ester Simpson, John Wayne Merritt, Deacon Calvin Sims, Bishop Melvin McCluster and Mickey, who called him son.
